Sexual assault can change the way you view yourself and your relationships. It can alter your understanding of the world. Beyond that, the myths and messages surrounding sexual assault– what people see as sex versus violence, who gets believed, how people are supposed to respond if they are assaulted– these can further harm you, and complicate your understanding of what happened.
In counselling, I will have your back in re-connecting with what you know to be true and envision what healing looks like for you. We can talk about your experience within the social and cultural context and explore how you make meaning of what happened. I can offer practical tools for finding calm and a sense of security. Counselling can nurture your connection with who you are, your strength and resistance, and your community. Your experience of violence does not define you.
